Beginning of the Cold, Snowy Weather

Recent Snow & Cold News Articles from Canadian Press, Huffington Post, Calgary Sun

Snow Comes Early To Alberta, Rocky Mountains (Sept 18, 2013)
Summer technically isn't over for two more days, but the snow is falling hard on ski hills in Southern Alberta, including Sunshine Village, Castle and Lake Louise ski resorts.

News (Nov 4, 2013)- Alberta's second snowiest weekend in a row continued Sunday morning with some places recording over 30 cm of snow. Officials urged drivers to stay off the roads altogether if they could. At least 10 crashes were reported in the Airdrie region.

Highway shuttered, schools closed and flights cancelled as massive storm hits southern Alberta (Dec 2, 2013)
Blizzard-like conditions have a grip on many parts of Alberta . . . as a massive storm system . . . has closed down the TransCanada highway to the east of Calgary. Several flights at the Calgary and Edmonton airports have been cancelled, while Calgary Mayor is asking employers to consider allowing people to work from home to keep drivers off the streets. Frigid temperatures will follow the system, with daytime highs in the minus 20 and colder range.

Alberta Extreme Wind Chill Warning Issued As Temperatures Plunge Below -40 C (Dec 6, 2013)
Environment Canada is warning Albertans to bundle up before going outside because conditions are so cold they've become dangerous. An extreme wind chill warning is in effect for much of southern and central Alberta, as temperatures are expected to plunge below -40 C with the wind chill Friday evening. Extreme wind chill values can cause frostbite on exposed skin in less than 10 minutes.

Calgary, Edmonton Snow Compounds Bad Road Conditions Caused By Blizzard And Cold Weather (Dec 9, 2013)
How horrible has the weather in Alberta been lately? So horrible that even NASA noticed. The planet's authority on all things space compared Edmonton's frigid temperatures to those found in the barren, frozen surface of Mars. It was even worse in Leedale, a hamlet north of Red Deer, which according to the Edmonton Journal, was the coldest place on Earth Friday, with a temperature reading of -40 C before wind chill. The galactically-miserable temperatures translated to mayhem in Alberta Mondaymorning. Calgary police reported 241 crashes on city streets Sunday. Lethbridge, Brooks, Medicine Hat, Crowsnest Pass and Cardston are all under a blowing snow warning, with wind gusts expected to exceed 110 km/h in some areas. Calgary Emergency Medical Services also declared a red alert Monday morning, saying there are no ambulances available to transport patients after multiple crashes tied up all available units.

Despite the very cold and snowy weather here (not even the first day of winter yet), we have been fortunate to not miss even one day at the Mission Office. The worst part of the bad weather is that it been the cause of several “fender-benders” by missionaries in the last six weeks.
